Amputation is cutting and separation of a limb bytrauma(Also called avulsion) orsurgery. As a surgical measure, it is used to control pain or a disease process caused by the affected limb, such as a tumormalignantorgangrene. In certain cases, it is performed in individuals as a preventive surgery for such problems. In some countries, amputation of the hands or feet is used as a form ofpunishmentfor criminals.[Citation needed]In some cultures and religions, minor amputations or performed as part of ritual mutilations.
