Hand Prosthesis i-LIMB Ultra

i-LIMB Ultra

The revolution in upper limb prosthetics

I-LIMB Hand was introduced worldwide in August ISPO 2007 Congress held in Vancouver. In Spain he was presented at the fair ORPROTEC November 2007 held in Valencia.

Since then more than 2500 patients are enjoying this new technology worldwide. In the United States there are more than 1500 protetizados with i-LIMB and Europe, about 500. In Spain, more than 50 patients have benefited from the functionality provided by the i-LIMB, spread around the territory (Madrid, Catalonia, Murcia, Galicia, Canary Islands, Valencia, Asturias, Navarra, Pais Vasco, Andalucia).

Protesis de mano i-limb

The i-LIMB Ultra is indicated for patients who have suffered an amputation in the upper limb, both unilateral and bilateral patients. The severity of limb loss produces a functional limitation that we must recover to the extent possible. Also consider that this situation will be maintained during the remaining life of the patient.

The group of upper limb amputees in need of special prosthetic devices that provide functionality as possible so they have autonomicmine to perform activities of daily living. That is why the i-LIMB Ultra is useful to meet the needs of these patients, providing them with the possibility of labor and social reintegration.

Functioning

I-LIMB Hand is controlled using the traditional myoelectric entry system with 1 or 2 muscle signals to open and close the fingers, being highly intuitive for the patient. The electrical signal generated in the muscles of the residual limb is picked up by the electrodes are located on that skin, controlling the operation of the hand.

Thus, those patients currently using a myoelectric prosthesis can adapt quickly to a new system. While for new patients, the i-LIMB means the possibility of a solution that has never before been available is a controlled myoelectric signal with 5 finger multiarticulados (at metacarpophalangeal joints and proximal interphalangeal) that are motorized so hand individually, allowing the user to completely surround the objects for safer and natural grip.

Each finger independently detects when it has sufficiently grasped an object, stopping at the time their empowerment and blocking it until the patient does, voluntarily, opening the muscle signal. So it makes abetter grip of objects, without pressure. If the patient wants to hand more firmly take the object, you can perform the closing signal activating the "Pulse" function that increases pressure on the object.

The movement is proportional to the movement made by the patient, adjusting the moving speed to the intensity of the muscle contraction.

When the patient has caught an object, it is possible to program the hand with the "Auto-grip" function that acts as a safety feature to prevent the object from falling in the event of an involuntary muscle movement of the patient. If this happens, the hand detects that is not a voluntary movement, and closes automatically on the object. To release, the patient must make a voluntary opening signal.

Special modes of operation

There is the possibility of programming special operating modes. The patient, through a voluntary movement, the hand can operate to all fingers not work, so that the chances are increased grip. Activation voluntary movements are:

• Maintenance of the opening movement once the hand is fully open for a programmable time.
• Two pulses consecutive opening movement once the hand is open completely
• Three pulses consecutive opening movement once the hand is open completely
• A co-contraction motion (activation of both muscles at once)
• With these movements the patient can activate the following special operating modes

The possibilities of rotation of the thumb of the hand i-LIMB The inclusion of a thumb, which like the human finger can be rotated in different positions, offers different configurations grip. This is one of the big differences with previous prosthetic hands. This design change means a change in the philosophy of the prosthetic upper limb, significantly increasing the functionality of the prosthetic hand, which provides the patient never imaginable possibilities so far. The passive rotation of the thumb offers a variety of configurations, which opens a range of possibilities for use by the patient:

This mode "accuracy" The index finger and thumb together (or index finger, middle finger and thumb) for picking up small objects and keep these objects, when precision is needed

Mode "key": In which, thumb closes on the index finger with a clamping force of up to 3.2 kg. This mode is used to keep objects such as a CD or a card. It also allows the patient to turn a key in a lock of a fully "human" way.

Mode "force": Where all fingers and thumb close together, to create a "fist" with a clamping force of up to 13.9 kg. This mode is used to keep a can, while we pull the ring or to carry objects like a suitcase or shopping bag.

Precision mode: move only the thumb and forefinger, so that the patient can pick up small objects. There is a choice between the other fingers, the third to fifth, remain fixed in the position of extension or flexion position.

Controlled precision mode: moves only the index finger with the thumb in the best position to grasp accurately, so that the patient can pick up small objects without having to guess where will hang both fingers. There is a choice between the other fingers, the third to fifth, remain fixed in the position of extension or flexion position.

Tripod mode: move only the thumb, index and middle, so that the patient can pick up objects that need control. therechoice between the other fingers, the third to fifth, remain fixed in the position of extension or flexion position.

Controlled tripod mode: move only the thumb, index and middle, so that the patient can pick up objects that need control without guessing where they will gather his fingers. There is a choice between the other fingers, the third to fifth, remain fixed in the position of extension or flexion position.

Mode "index": The thumb and fingers are closed, but the index finger remains extended -a only way today and that is very useful in modern times. Patients can use this mode to press the computer keys, phone, ATM ...

Mano i-Limb

There are two settings that allows patients to get the "thumb position" mode, whereby the patient is able to close only the thumb, keeping the other fingers extended. This mode allows the patient easy placement of the jacket or allows the patient to have a more natural position of the hand during ambulation. It also allows stably catch objectsflat as a tray or dish. There are 2 options, the thumb moves continuously until the patient mode switch or moving in a single movement and automatically return to the mode of movement of all fingers.

Mode "lateral movement thumb" in which the other fingers are closed and only the thumb, designed for lateral grip objects like keys, CD moves ...

Mode "as" where we can choose, according to the will of the patient, which fingers remain flexed and extended, to perform gestures. There are some more specific modes that can facilitate operations such as, among others, use of the computer mouse or squeezing the trigger of a spray addition, there handheld version i-LIMB Ultra Revolution, including the thumb with motorized rotation, that adds functionality to the patient getting gripping perform movements, especially precision, with greater ease.

All programming of the i-LIMB is done with the BioSim program, of which there are 2 versions:
BioSim-Pro Ortoprotesico developed for the technical adjustment and customize the operation of the hand as well as training exercises. BioSim-i designed so that the patient can do training exercises and modify the different modes special role in theirevery day, without the professional perform these modifications.

Fortress hand i-LIMB

The hand is made of materials that provide high durability and resistance. This allows each finger is individually capable of supporting a weight of 32 kg (static) and hand as a whole, in force mode, it is capable of supporting a weight of 90 kg (static).

cosmetic

The development made in the functionality of the prosthetic hand, has been accompanied by a significant advance in cosmetics, both aesthetically and a dynamic level. Cosmetics is a cover that covers the i-LIMB hand and fingers. Thus, a cosmetic is achieved with the best aesthetic development. The set makes get the first prosthetic hands that mimic the human hand, both human appearance and movement.

There are different options cover for the i-LIMB: i-Limb skin active: transparent or black glove designed for patient training silicone.

i-Limb skin nature: Standard glove with natural appearance, due to their different coloration depending areas and with details like veins or wrinkles. You can choose from 10 colors for customization of the patient.

Glove i-Limb customized: is a glove that is made with the color and detail as the patient.

Baterace

There are two battery options for the i-LIMB Ultra
Battery 7.4 V 1.3 Ah Li Polymer. It is a divided and superfine battery, which provides great aesthetics lace Battery 7.4 V 2.4 Ah Li Polymer. It is a higher capacity battery, which provides great autonomy to the patient, especially recommended in patients with highly active or if used in combination with other myoelectric components on the wrist or elbow.

Virtu-limb system

The Virtu-limb system can be connected via Bluetooth with the computer and used for a variety of options:
Myoelectric signal measurement patient and find the location of the electrodes. Patient training and control of their muscle signals. Patient training in controlling the functions of the i-limb ultra hand.
